KUALA LUMPUR, 28 Oct – Petra Group founder and chief executive Datuk Vinod Sekhar
has become awarded the prestigious Global Green product design award.
The honour is to be given to Datuk Vinod and Green Rubber Global, a subsidiary of the Petra Group, for the development of its revolutionary rubber recycling technology. Global Green USA, a part of Green Cross International, is the world’s leading environmental
non-profit organisation. Datuk Vinod would be the first Asian and only the third non-American to be bestowed the Award. The previous international recipients of the honour were Mikhail Gorbachev and Giorgio Armani. Green Rubber will be the first non-American company honoured.
The Global Green Sustainable Design Awards were established in 1999 to recognize specific advancements in industry, building, media, organizations, and public policy. Matt Petersen, the President and Chief Executive of Global Green USA, said: “At a personal
level this award recognizes Vinod Sekhar’s tremendous leadership, including his unwavering commitment to shift from using raw resources to waste to meet our world's rubber needs. With Green Rubber's technology, we also reduce forests being destroyed for plantations, reduce the increasing stockpile of waste tyres and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
This award also recognizes Green Rubber's innovative design and development of high quality, cost effective and environmentally friendly reuse of tyres into a quality product.”
Datuk Vinod will receive the prestigious award at a star studded gala dinner in New York in on December 10.
Mr Petersen added: “We plan to honour those who are tearing down the walls that stand in the way of a sustainable and secure world through their innovative designs and leadership.”
The award coincides with Green Rubber beginning to fulfil its potential to become a global player in the rubber industry. With its patented Delink technology, invented by the Late Tan Sri Dr. B.C. Sekhar, Green Rubber is the world’s leading rubber recycling technology
Tyres are considered by the UN as one of the world’s main environmental hazards, with a total of 7 billion now sitting in landfills. An additional 1.3 billion tyres are discarded every year.
Datuk Vinod said: “I am very proud to receive the Global Green award. But I receive it on behalf of all my colleagues who have played critical roles in our development, and especially for my late father, Dr. B.C. Sekhar. His dream was to solve one of humanity’s major
environmental challenges. Today, I can proudly say, he has.
“With Green Rubber’s Delink technology we can start to make a real dent in the 7 billion tyres that are currently sitting in landfills around the world, causing disease and creating a massive environmental blight on the planet.”
Tan Sri Dr. Munir Majid, non-executive director of Green Rubber and chairman of Malaysia Airlines, said: “I would also like to salute that great towering Malaysian and scientist, the late Tan Sri Dr B. C. Sekhar, the inventor of this technology. It shows what Malaysians are truly capable of achieving on the global stage.”
Y.A.M. Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Tuanku Ja’afar, Chairman of Petra Group, added : “When Vinod and I founded the Petra Group 18 years ago, little did we realise that we would be making such a big contribution to the Green Revolution. Bringing the late Tan Sri Dr B.C Sekhar's rubber recycling technology to fruition has been a long and often difficult journey. Vinod has led our team from the shores of Malaysia to the international arena with great perseverance and determination, knocking down every barrier that stood in his way.”
Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin, Chairman of Green Rubber Malaysia, said: “Green Rubber is but
one example of how Vinod gives back to society.”
