International equestrian championships under highly impressive floodlighting

Floodlight poles by Pfleiderer Europoles illuminate the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany

Neumarkt and Aachen, Germany, 23 August 2006 The Equestrian Arena in Aachen,

commonly called the “holy turf” or the “Wimbledon of equestrian sport,” was equipped by Pfleiderer Europoles with floodlight poles for the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany. The competition in show jumping and dressage was held at the Aachen arena under floodlight, during prime TV time, and before 40,000 enthusiastic spectators daily.

Perfect light for show jumping and dressage

The floodlighting systems effectively fulfilled all requirements for the championships: optimal conditions for the active participants, best-possible views for all spectators, and brilliant, non-glare light for TV broadcasting. In addition, SpiderCam facilities enabled dramatic TV camera views, since these systems float freely over the arena. This is possible by steel support cables that are supported from all four floodlight poles with special mounting units. An additional treat at the 2006 World Equestrian Games was the extraordinary TV shots made by a cameraman from the German WDR broadcasting system: made possible by a platform designed and especially installed on a floodlight pole, at a height of 35 metres. The decisions on the competitions lasted until late in the night and were perfectly viewed and telecast, without any restrictions whatsoever, thanks to the floodlighting systems. After nightfall, the floodlight poles immerse the arena in resplendent light that enables brilliant TV images.

Pole design, production, and foundations all from one supplier on a one-stop basis

For the company responsible for the lighting system, Lichttechnik Hessling, Pfleiderer Europoles provided the structural engineering and the design of the poles, as well as the engineering of the foundations. Pfleiderer Europoles was also responsible for production and assembly of the poles, as well as execution of the pole foundations.

“Our engineers can design the most cost-effective foundation versions for all soil conditions. The extremely soft soil in Aachen dictated that we executed a drilled-pile foundation,”

explains Klaus Dengler, Project Director at Pfleiderer Europoles. He added “This form of

footing enabled us to provide pole foundations in an extremely small area, without wide-area earthworks. After all, we couldn’t dig under half of the grandstands to provide the foundations for the masts.”

Furthermore, the poles were coated with special colour shades, in accordance with the specifications of the “colour philosopher” Friedrich Ernst von Garnier.

A dress rehearsal of the floodlights led excitingly up to the 2006 World Equestrian Games The dress rehearsal of the floodlight system got top marks from the judges even before opening of the 2006 World Equestrian Games. In the week before the opening ceremonies of the championships, thousands of spectators at the arena enjoyed the training sessions of the German Show Jumping Team, held until late at night under floodlight. These dress rehearsals revealed at an early stage just how exciting the most famous equestrian arena of the world would be, with floodlighting from its four 45-metre floodlight poles, each equipped with 64 floodlights.

2006 World Equestrian Games

The fifth World Equestrian Games, held in 2006 in Aachen, was opened on 20 August 2006 and is next to the World Cup in football, the most important sporting event to be held in Germany this decade. A total of 800 athletes from more than 60 countries competed for 16 gold metals in 7 disciplines. Around 500,000 spectators from all over the world were expected in Aachen.
