    NOTES TO STUDENTS

    1. Students are strongly advised to submit the application for credit transfer/subject exemption before the end of the Add/Drop period of their first semester on the programme.

2. (a) Credit Transfer

    i. Students may be granted credit transfer for recognised previous study for meeting the credit requirement for award. The transferred credits may be counted towards more

    than one award.

ii. In order to be considered for a PolyU award, all students must satisfy the residential requirement for at least 1/3 of the normal credit requirement of the award, unless the

respective professional requirements stipulate the otherwise.

iii. Students shall not be granted credit transfer (including exempted credits at admission) for more than 67% of the normal credit requirement of the award if the credits are

gained from PolyU, or for more than 50% if the credits are gained or part of these are gained from outside PolyU.

iv. All credit transfer will take effect in the semester for which they are approved. A student who applies for transfer of credits during the re-enrolment or add/drop period for a

particular semester will only be eligible for graduation at the end of that semester, even if the granting of the credit transfer will immediately enable the student to satisfy the

total credit requirement for the award.

    v. Credit transfer can be given to credits earned by students through study at an overseas institution and under an approved exchange programme. Students should, before they

go abroad for exchange programme, seek prior approval from the Programme Offering Faculty/Department on their study plan and credit transferability by completing Form

AS41a. Subject to the approval of the Programme Offering Faculty/Department and the Subject Offering Departments, if relevant, students can be given transferred credits,

with or without grade, beyond 50% of the normal credit requirement of the award. However, these students are still required to complete at least 1/3 of the normal credit

requirement of the award, unless the respective professional bodies specify the otherwise.

vi. Students are requested to complete Sections I & Part (a) of II of Form AS41c if they wish to apply for credit transfer. A credit transfer fee of HK$145 per credit will be

charged (with the exception of those full-time students paying a fixed annual tuition fee).

     (b) Subject Exemption

    i. Students may apply for exemption from taking certain subjects if they have successfully completed similar subjects previously in another programme. For mandatory

language subjects, they need to demonstrate that they had already acquired the level of language proficiency. However, they should note that the credits associated with the

exempted subject will not be counted towards the credit requirements for award. It will therefore be necessary for them to take another subject in order to satisfy the credit

    requirement for the award.

ii. Given the nature and the medium of instruction of the subject matter, non-local students of UGC-funded full-time programmes (Bachelors degree and Higher Diploma

programmes) can be exempted from taking the mandatory general education subject China Studies. Instead, they will be required to take one additional 2-credit

Broadening GE subject as a replacement. Students who fall under this category and want to apply exemption for China Studies should indicate their non-local status in

Special Note under Section II (b).

iii. For approved exemption, students should register a replacement subject during the subject registration period for the semester concerned. Students should consult the

Programme Offering Faculty/Department for the replacement subject to be taken.

iv. Students are requested to complete Sections I & Part (b) of II of Form AS41c if they wish to apply for subject exemption. An exemption fee of HK$75 per credit will be

charged (with the exception of those full-time students paying a fixed annual tuition fee).

    3. The validity period of credits earned is eight years from the year in which the subject was completed, unless otherwise specified by the Subject Offering Department. Credits earned should remain valid at the time when students apply for transfer of credits.

    4. Completed form should be submitted to the General Office of the Programme Offering Faculty/Department preferably before the start of a new semester and latest before the end of the add/drop period for the semester concerned. Please attach to this form copies of the documents in support of the qualification on the basis of which exemption and/or credit transfer is claimed, and where relevant, Form AS41a, if prior approval is given for subjects taken at exchange-out institution. Original copy should be produced for verification, when required.

    5. Students will receive notification on the result of application from the Programme Offering Faculty/Department normally within 14 days from the date of submission. For approved cases, students paying credit fees will receive a debit note for settling the appropriate fees. If students fail to settle the fees by the payment deadline, the approval of this application and the registration on the programme concerned will be declared null and void.
