Introduction

All travellers, other than Australian and New Zealand citizens, require a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to travel to Australia.

What is an ETA?

An ETA is an electronically stored authority for travel to Australia which:

replaces the visa label or stamp in a passport

is available through participating travel agencies, airlines and the internet

does not require an application form and

enables passengers to be processed quickly on arrival in Australia.

The ETA system means travel agents can provide total client service and travel arrangements.

The Australian Government does not charge travel agents and airlines for the use of the ETA system.

Who can get an ETA?

People can obtain an ETA and travel to Australia if:

they hold a valid ETA eligible passport and they travel with that passport and

their visit to Australia is for tourism, visiting relatives or business visitor activities (undertaking of

business enquiries and contractual negotiations, including attending conferences and trade fairs).

This visa will not allow business visitors to perform work.

ETA holders are subject to the following conditions:

not to stay in Australia for more than three months

     be in good health

     have no criminal convictions.

People who do not meet the requirements shown above should contact the nearest Australian visa office for advice on appropriate types of visas. Refer to the Contact information section of this manual

    or www.immi.gov.au/contacts/visa-enquiries/eta.htm

ETA purpose of travel

There is a single ETA available to eligible passport holders to travel to Australia for tourism or business visitor activities. This visa will not allow the applicant to perform work while in Australia.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship is required to capture the applicants primary purpose of travel (for example, a tourist or a business visitor) to Australia.

    Please enter:

T for Tourist (tourism, visiting friends and relatives and recreational activities)

    or

B for Business Visitor (business visitor activity is undertaking of business enquiries and

contractual negotiations, including attending conferences and trade fairs. This does not

allow business visitors to perform work).

Regardless of the applicants purpose of travel, the ETA will allow for:

a validity period of 12 months

a stay of up to three months on each visit

     multiple travel

tourism, family visit and business visitor activities (undertaking of business enquiries and

contractual negotiations, including attending conferences and trade fairs. Important: work of

any kind is prohibited on this visa)

    no visa application charge.

Proof that an ETA is held

As an ETA is an electronic authority, it can only be verified through the Electronic Travel Authority System (ETAS) or the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) (see below). It is not possible to provide a traveller with physical evidence of an ETA.

Do not attach confirmation slips to passports. It is recommended that all persons who hold an ETA are advised of the departments website which has information for ETA holders. Visa holders can visit www.immi.gov.au. For further information please contact your regional ETA helpdesk, details are listed in the Contact Information section of this manual.

Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO)

VEVO is a free, online service that allows visa holders to check the details and entitlements of their visa. To access VEVO, visa holders can visit www.immi.gov.au/vevo

At airline check-in

Airlines are able to confirm whether a traveller has authority to travel to Australia by using the Advance Passenger Processing system (APP).

Detailed information on the APP system is provided in Australias APP: Advance Passenger Processing System manual at www.immi.gov.au
