     JOB DESCRIPTION CERTIFICATED

    POSITION: SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

    A. PRIMARY FUNCTION

    Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and the school site Principals, through individual and small group therapy sessions, and within a general education class when appropriate, plan and implement remedial activities for pupils with speech, hearing or language deficits; administer and interpret appropriate speech and language tests, scales and language samples; design individualized programs addressing deficits of content, form and function of language and speech based upon such assessment; participate as a member of the support team for pupils receiving instruction in a variety of school-based and community settings.

    B. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    1. Work effectively with students, parents, teachers, other speech language

    specialists, and other members of the student services team in providing a

    high quality of remedial help in the area of speech/language therapy.

    2. Evaluate referred pupils in the areas of phonology, morphology, semantics,

    syntax and pragmatics using a variety of assessment tools, language

    sampling procedures, materials, and teaching techniques.

    3. Provide on-going Response to Intervention activities designed to identify

    pupils with speech or language deficits or language based academic delays.

    Act upon referrals from District staff members and parents and serve as an

    active participant on each assigned school’s RTI team.

    4. Complete speech and language reports for each pupil assessed prior to IEP

    meetings; develop appropriate IEPs containing measurable goals and

    objectives based on assessment, learning and learning continuums; develop

    and implement therapy plans which correlate directly to pupil’s objectives;

    monitor pupil progress, and adjust intervention strategies and activities

    accordingly.

    5. Provide services, when appropriate, through an integrated and collaborative

    model (co-teach, push-in, etc.) within a general education setting to model

    specific instructional strategies that improve students' phonemic awareness,

    vocabulary, language and/or communication skills.

    6. Conference and consult with parents and provide material/literature to

    support and assist with the development of functional communication skills

    for the child.

    7. Conduct all pupil-related procedures in compliance with state and federal

    regulations and timelines and comply with the Monterey County Special

    Education Local Plan Area procedural handbook.

    8. Prepare and post therapy schedules at each site served; prepare a written

    pre-planned daily schedule of pupil speech and language lessons and

    activities; request support services by discussion and/or written referral with

    supervisor, nurses, psychologists, and others.

    9. Supervise the speech and language aide if appropriate to setting.

    10. Complete monthly Medi-Cal treatment and assessment logs for

    reimbursement. Complete quarterly Medi-Cal administrative activities time

    surveys.

    C. QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

    1. Strong organizational and planning skills

    2. How to work effectively and cooperatively with a team

    3. Identification criteria for pupils with speech and language problems;

    assessing pupil’s speech-related needs; and developing an individualized

    program based on identification, assessment

    4. First Aid

    5. CPR certification within six (6) months of employment

     Ability to:

    1. Work with all populations of disabled children who display speech and language and communication deficits

    2. Work with teachers, administrators and parents

    3. Communicate effectively and easily, both orally and in writing=

    D. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    1. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Masters

    Degree in Speech Pathology or related field

    a. Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university b. California Credential to teach in area of speech, hearing and language

    disabilities

    c. American Speech-Language-Hearing Association certification preferred d. Possess specialized techniques or skills pertinent to working with

    communicatively disabled students

e. Knowledge of and experience using assistive technology and

    augmentative communication devices preferred

    f. Evidence of successful experience providing services to students identified

    with speech, language, and/or hearing deficits

    D. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and

    responsibilities of the position.

    2. Ability to see for purposes of reading correspondence, documents, and other

    printed matter.

    3. Ability to hear and understand speech and normal levels in person and/or on

    the telephone.

    4. Ability to use proper spelling and grammar, oral and written and complete

    records accurately and in a timely fashion.

    5. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal

    conversation in person, on a telephone, and or on two-way radio.

    6. Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone and business machines

    (including typewriter, computer, calculator).

    E. WORKING CONDITIONS

     Travel from site to site as necessary. Valid California driving license and proof of insurance required.
