    A Brief Introduction of Tengchong

Located in the southwest of China, Tengchongs name dated

back from Ancient Tang Book, and has been changed many times since Xianhan Dynasty. Founded in 1913 Tengchong county has an area of 5,845 square kilometers. It borders with Burma to the north with a shared border of 148 km, 18 towns included. There are 7 nationalities who have settled here generation by generation, such as Han, Dai, Lisu, Hui, Bai, Wa, AChang. It has a population of 642,000 at the end of 2008, including 48,000 minorities. We can conclude Six-well-known characteristics to introduce Tengchong as follows.

A famous mountain in the world---Gaoligongshan

Mountain. It is well known in the world because of three traits, that is nature, culture and economy. It is said that when somebody is on the top of the mountain, he or she seems to stand on two continents, Asian Continent to the east and Indian Continent to the west. Gaoligongshan Mountain is one of the precious genes banks, which was listed as Biology Diversity Nature Reserves by UNESCO and Rank-A Reserve by World Wild-life Animals Foundation. The Southwest Silk Road and China-India Road go through it. She has a close relation with many important historical events in China, especially Dianxi

Anti-Japanese War. Gaoligongshan Mountain plays an important role in Tengchong, so it is called Mother Mountain by Tengchong people.

A unique geology wonder. Tengchong is the only area in

which exist both volcanoes and geological heat in China mainland .Its size is so large that the same size can hardly been seen in the world .The famous poet , Li Ying ,used to think highly of Tengchong, Here are ninety volcanoes and eighty springs. Many famous tourism attractions, such as the Valley of the Supernatural Columns, Beihai Wetland, Dieshui Waterfall are the results of the volcanoes function.

A passage leading to South Asia. 2,400 years ago, the

Southwest Silk Road, which was set up by Chinese ancestors, entered the Burma from Tengchong and reached India, Afghanistan and so on in South Asia. Due to the road, Tengchong was opened and developed earlier and trade has been flourished and economy has been prospered. So it won a reputation given by Xu Xiake as the first remote Town in Southwest border of China. Tengchongs medicine, Basketworks

of Bines and Xuan Paper (hand-made), which are called three precious treasures, have been sold-well at home and abroad. In 1899, Britain began to set up a consulate in Tengchong, and

Tengyue Customs was founded by Qing Dynasty Government in 1902. During the World War?, the famous Stilwell

Road-China-India Road was constructed. Now, in Tengchong, there is Hongqiao port, a national state-level port, and two international second--class asphalt roads leading to Kachin State located in northern Burma. The passage that accesses to South Asia strides across time and space. It has seen the past and today of Tengchong and it is a hopeful road to the world.

A piece of jade not bored with even though youve

observed it for 100 times. The jade originated in Hpakart,

Kachin State of Burma, but Tengchong people first discovered its commercial value and first rose the jade processing industry. Until now it has a 600-year-processing history. In August, 2005, Tengchong won the great honor as the The First City of Jade in

    China by Asian Jewelry Federation.

A period of brilliant history. In May 1942, the Japanese

Army entered Burma. The Burma Road was cut off and the west of Nujiang River, including Tengchong, many parts of the land was occupied. From then on, as the main battlefield, Tencchong played an essential part in the Anti-Japanese War in Yunnan and

thBurma. On September 14 1944, through 127 days hard battles,

the Chinese Expeditionary Force annihilated the Japanese Army

and recaptured the first city---Tengchong in the war. After

threcovering Tengchong, on July 7, 1945, in order to

commemorate the heroes and martyrs who contributed their lives to the country, Tengchong people built the Guoshang National Martyr Graveyard. Now the Guoshang National Martyr Graveyard is a key national historical and cultural site and the national patriotism educational base.

A book of frontier Han culture. The biggest difference

between Tengchong and the other frontier counties lies that it was dominated by Han culture. For a long time, the Central Culture mixed with the ethnic culture and the exotic culture. Thus, Tengchong culture was formed, whose key connotation is peace and harmony and the basic traits are opening and containing. Heshun, the top one of the Ten Charming Towns in China, is an epitome of Tengchong culture. From ancient to modern times, many celebrities were born here, such as Li Genyuan, a leading statesman during the 1911 Revolution in modern times, Zhang Wende, the Anti-Japanese county magistrate, Ai Siqi, a famous Marxist philosopher and so on. Today the Tengchong overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hongkong, Macao, and Taiwan reach 350,000. They distribute in 23 countries and regions in the world.
