cd/opt/software3p/postgres-8.2.4

    ./configure - -prefix=/opt/pgsql - -without-readline make

    adduser postgres

    mkdir /opt/pgsql/data

    su - postgres

    /usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data /usr/local/pgsql/bin/postgres -D /usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 &

    /usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test

    /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test

3). Create startup script with 755 permissions (etc/init.d/postgres_start):

#!bin/bash

    su postgres –c “/opt/pgsql/bin/postmaster –D /opt/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1&”

4). Create shutdown script with 755 permissions (etc/init.d/postgres_stop):

#!bin/bash

    su postgres –c “/opt/pgsql/bin/pg_ctl stop -D /opt/pgsql/data”

5). Create startup and shutdown links :

cd /etc/rc3.d

    In s ../init.d/postgres_start S82postgres

    Cd /etc/rc6.d

    In s ../init.d/postgres_stop K81postgres

    ALTERUSER postgres PASSWORD'' \q

    2). To verify the password (to test if PostgreSQL accepts a DS-Client connection):
