Manchester Metropolitan Students Union

Introduction

Thank you for the interest you have expressed in the position of Web

Designer/Developer at MMUnion, the Students’ Union for Manchester Metropolitan

University, MMU. MMUnion is a democratic student organisation which is led by an elected panel of student Executive Officers

MMUnion is at the core of the student experience for all students at MMU, through its representation and advice duties to the Activities and Commercial services it offers. We are one of the UK’s biggest Students’ Unions representing some 35,000 plus students.

Our UK students study from the centre of Manchester out to South Manchester at Didsbury and down as far as the Faculty of MMU Cheshire some 40 miles south of the city centre at Crewe and Alsager. MMU also has a number of full and part time distance learning students both in the UK and internationally which are all covered under MMUnion’s very wide all encompassing umbrella.

We are an Investor in People and proud of being a progressive employer. Our aim is simply to be a great place to work, where we respect work life balance, support individual training and learning and create a positive work environment where staff are supported and encouraged to do their best.

We are entering into an exciting period and have an ambitious vision to be the leading new university students union by 2012. We have recently invested in a content management system that will enable us to better engage our membership and are looking for a talented individual to help drive forward our digital strategy.

Working as part of the marketing & communications team, you will be responsible for leading the technical development of our website and membership system to deliver an award-winning site that sets us apart from the crowd. Degree-educated, your CSS, html and JavaScript skills will be top notch and already being used on a daily basis. Your passion for all things digital will be self evident.

A creative / design background is not essential as MMUnion has an in-house design team and your technical skills are what is most critical in this role. You must, however, be able to demonstrate a full appreciation and knowledge of the principles of web design and aesthetics. Knowledge and experience of CRM and database systems would also be beneficial.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, driven individual to really make their mark in a creative and supportive environment.

MMUnion Profile

MMUnion is the backbone of student life at Manchester Metropolitan University, MMU. It is a charitable organisation run for the benefit of its members. We are here to represent students creating a united voice for our 35,000 members based at the seven sites of MMU. MMUnion operates from premises on three sites: In Manchester at 99 Oxford Road, near to Manchester city centre and at MMU Cheshire, at Crewe and Alsager campuses.

MMUnion exists to represent all MMU students whilst enhancing their student experience. It provides representation and welfare advice and support whilst offering exciting social, cultural and sporting activities as well as commercial services such as food, drink and entertainment. MMUnion expands the student experience by providing these activities, whilst also carrying out its vital role of facilitating the representation of students' views which is complemented by student welfare, advice and information.

Commercial Services

MMUnion’s Commercial Services Department is responsible for bars, shops,

    entertainment, catering and conferences.

Daytime The range of commercial services provided continues to maintain MMUnion as a daytime social focus for students studying at MMU.

The main shop is situated at 99 Oxford Road and is supported by retail outlets at both Crewe and Alsager sites. The shops sell a wide range of student provisions including stationery, artists’ materials, confectionary, newspapers and magazines and University and Union memorabilia such as ties, tops and hoodies.

Night time

On the first floor is a 900 capacity venue that plays host to a variety of activities and events. We run weekly club nights throughout the academic year, in addition to special ‘one-off’ and monthly events. We also work with a large number of external promoters

who hire our facilities. The venue is open 7 days a week and offers excellent quality and well priced food in addition to being a place to drink and watch any of 6 plasma screens, or enjoy the varied entertainments programme.

The venue operations are a successful social and entertainment provision for students and non-students alike, operating to 2am on most nights. All customers help to provide an active and busy environment. We take pride in offering high standards of service and equally high standards of product quality. The Students’ Union faces competition from

national operators on the high street and is committed to meeting, and where possible, exceeding the levels of service on offer to customers elsewhere.

Commercial Services in Cheshire

MMUnion Cheshire is responsible for the retail offerings within the two Students’ Union

buildings on the Crewe and Alsager sites. Our Crewe Site is currently undergoing

redevelopment and our improved services will be opening at the start of the 2009/10

academic year in September. Across both sites, we offer a wide range of convenience

and academic provisions including stationery, confectionary, University and Union

memorabilia, ties, tops, hooded jumpers, etc. In addition to this, MMUnion is also

    responsible for the student entertainment programme at Cheshire sites as a whole;

delivering events both on site and off working in partnership with local venues.

Student Activities and Development

Many students are members of a club or society of some description and this

participation can provide students with a sense of identity, community and friendship

during their time at University. Club and society activities also provide a welcome break

from studying and students are able to develop their inter-personal and extra-curricular

skills as well as being involved in something they enjoy or believe in.

Manchester Societies

There are over 30 active groups in MMUnion ranging from political and religious to

performance and activity based, which provide for a diverse range of interests. Societies

such as the Christian Union and People and Planet use the many rooms in the building

for seminars, training and outside speakers.

Manchester AU

The Athletic Union currently has over 900 members and 36 clubs ranging from

American Football to Wrestling, with teams competing at both local and national level.

Cheshire Societies

There are a number of active Societies in MMUnion Cheshire ranging from LGBT and

religious to performance and activity based, which all provide for a diverse range of

interests offering students unity and support.

Cheshire AU

The Athletic Union currently has over 800 members across 20 clubs which range from

our National Champion Cheer Leading Squad to our BUSA winning Boxing Club, with

teams competing within British University Sports Association at both local and national

level as well as in local non University Leagues.

     3

Media

Student media is an essential communication tool and an ideal student development

opportunity. MMUnion’s primary publication is Pulp Magazine. 3,000 copies are

produced every fortnight and are distributed across every faculty. The magazine is

coordinated by a full time student editor and a team of volunteer student writers,

designers, illustrators and photographers, who specialise in areas as diverse as theatre to

social affairs. In addition to MMUnion’s own publication there is a Cheshire Faculty

student led magazine, Scholar, and the National Student newspaper which are also

distributed throughout Cheshire and the wider MMUnion community

Welfare

As a result of significant investment in recent years, MMUnion has a well-equipped and

recently re-located Advice Centre and also offers a comprehensive service in Cheshire.

The centre deals with a huge range of student issues covering student housing, academic

appeals, debt management and sexual health. The Advice Centre fulfils an important role

for students at MMU, many of whom come from non-traditional backgrounds. Last year,

MMUnion’s specialist advisers dealt with over 12,500 enquiries on a wide range of

    subjects.

The welfare and equal opportunities of students is an integral component of MMUnion.

Campaigns are run throughout the year to raise awareness of potential problems that

can arise. This aims to ensure that students feel as safe and as happy as possible during

their time at university, and are aware of the various support structures in place should

    problems arise.

     4

MMUnion Democracy

One of the strengths of the student movement is that it is led by students, for students.

Recent changes in Charity law have provided MMUnion with the opportunity to review

its governance arrangements with the overriding purpose of providing the legal

framework for the provision of excellent governance that supports world class student

    engagement.

The new governance structure and associated engagement strategy underpin

MMUnion’s mission to become the leading New University Students Union in the UK.

MMUnion believes that these changes will lead to students:

     Being better listened to.

     Having fewer barriers to involvement.

Having greater control to direct the work of the union.

     Having a student centred experience.

Having more accessible ways to comment on their student experience.

     Being happier Students.

The proposed structure is detailed overleaf.
