     2009 Summer Edition CITIZENSHIP 20076 HONESTY NEW STUDENTS

    Mandatory Orientation: Orientation is mandatory for all new students entering grades 1-8. If your student

    misses orientation and you have not obtained prior approval, your seat will be offered to the next person on the

    waitlist. The orientation schedule is as follows: rdthMonday, August 3 through Wednesday, August 5

    Monday; 8:00am 11:30am grades 1-5 Monday; 8:00am 1:30pm grades 6-8

    Tuesday; 8:00am -11:30 am grades 1-8

    Wednesday; 8:00am 11:30am grades 1-8

    Middle school students need to bring lunch on Monday. All students should bring a book to read and a snack

    each day. Students must be in uniform for orientation.

     thKindergarten Students: Kindergarten students will have a Popsicle party at Highline on Saturday, August 15,

    from 10:00-11:00. Orientation for Kindergarten students will be during the first three days of school as

    described in your enrollment package.

    RETURNING STUDENTS

Required registration for 2009-2010: Registration for returning students is done online via the

    parent/guardian portal in Veracross. You will also need to verify and update (if necessary), any changes in e-

    mail address, phone numbers, mailing address or pickup preferences. If you don’t have access to a computer to complete your registration, the front office will re-open for registration on Monday, August 3rd, 8:00 - 4:00pm.

    You can come in and use a computer at school. If you have not registered your student by Friday, August th7, their seat will be offered to a student on the wait list.

Summer Testing: This year we will be administering fall testing prior to the start of school so we can get right

    into learning. Letters were sent home at the end of the school year with your child’s testing date and time. You are required to make sure that your child attends his/her assigned testing schedule. Look for an email early

    next week with more details.

    Summer Packets: Keep your student’s mind engaged and academic skills sharp by having him/her work on the summer packet a little bit each day. Summer packets will be collected by homeroom teachers upon our

    return to school. We will be honoring all students who complete 100% of their packets with a token gift. Please encourage your student to engage in important summer leaning!

     ALL STUDENTS

Student Fees: Student Fees for 2009 2010 are $45 per student. We are happy to accept your payment at the stoffice. Payment is due by August 31. Students who meet the eligibility guidelines established by the federal

    government to receive free lunch will have school fees waived. If your family qualifies, contact the front office.

DPS Lunch Applications: If your student attended any DPS school last year, you should have received an

    application in the mail from the DPS Food and Nutrition office. Part of our schools funding is based on the

    information provided in these documents. Therefore it is crucial that all families fill out and return the application

as directed even if you don’t think you will qualify. If your student did not attend a DPS school last year, you can

    pick one up in the front office.

    Uniform Information: You can purchase uniforms online at www.frenchtoast.com Click on find your school’s dress code; enter either the school name OR our school’s source code: QS5NJYR. Please read the Dress Code Requirements from the student handbook at the end of the newsletter.

Uniform Closet: Highline has a uniform closet where you can trade in gently used uniforms that are in good

    condition for another size or purchase gently used uniforms at a discounted price. The uniform closet is run by

    volunteers. This year our volunteers have offered to be here during the following days and times before school

    starts for your convenience: th Thursday, August 13, 9:00-11:00 and 12:30-2:30 th Friday, August 14, 9:00-11:00 th Saturday, August 15, 11:00-1:00

    Please be respectful of our volunteers time and be aware that the front office can not open the uniform closet

    for you if you are not able to make it during the volunteer times.

     thSaturday, August 15, Volunteer Work Days, 9:00am Until We’re Done: Get a jump start on your volunteer hours! We need a lot of volunteers to help make our school shine before our students come back. Please join

    us to clean up the playground, do light construction, move furniture into place, and help teachers set up their

    classrooms. If your students are old enough (fourth grade and above) to be able to help move desks and

    chairs back into place, vacuum and tidy, bring them along and double your hours. There will not be any child care available on site for the young ones. If you team up with another Highline family for child care, they too

    can earn hours for watching the kids while you volunteer. Please bring brooms, tools, and a willingness to work

    hard to create an environment worthy of our students!

     thMonday, August 17, All School Ice Cream Social, 5:00pm-6:00pm: Have you missed your school friends over the summer? Maybe you want to meet some of your new class mates. Come to the ice cream social to

    catch up with old friends, make new ones, and find out which homeroom teacher you will have. Bring your school supplies.

     thstthWednesday August 19, First Day of School, 7:50am-2:10pm. All students in 1-8 grades return for a full thday of school on Wednesday, August 19. As a reminder, Highline’s school day runs from 7:50am-3:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Every Wednesday, we dismiss at 2:10pm.

     stFriday, August 21, Returning Students Summer Packets DUE: Students should return completed summer stpackets to their new homeroom teachers on Friday, August 21.

    GENERAL SCHOOL REMINDERS AND UPDATES

Wednesday Early Release at 2:10pm: Please remember, Highline dismisses all students at 2:10pm each

    Wednesday. School will dismiss at 3:30 on all the other days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). Kids thAdventures is available beginning at 2:10pm on Wednesdays, starting August 15. Students not picked up by 2:30 on Wednesdays and 3:50 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, will be escorted to Kids

    Adventures and you will be held responsible for the registration fee as well as payment. Students pre-registered with Kids Adventures may attend anytime.

Pre-register your student for Kids Adventures. If you think you may need before and/or after school care,

    pre-registering will make it easier when you find yourself in a jam and can’t make it to pick-up on time. Once you are pre-registered, you can use them on an as needed basis. Call Amy Babcock at 303-767-2038 for more

     thSign Up to Volunteer For Field Day: Field Day is Friday, August 28. We will need about 25 volunteers to help with this fun community building event. Mark your calendars now and sign up when the office re-opens on

    Monday, August 3rd.

    Mark Your Calendars Now: Mark your calendars now for days off from school, holidays and vacations. Plan

    your vacations and appointments during regularly scheduled days off if at all possible.

    Highline Academy’s preferred uniform brand is French Toast.

    Not all French Toast uniforms are acceptable; a detailed list of Highline’s Uniform is available in the office and

    online at www.highlineacademy.org

    Uniform can be purchased:

    1. Online at www.frenchtoast.com entering Highline’s code, QS5NJYR will bring up Highline approved

    uniform pieces only.

    2. By phone at 1-800-FRENCHTOAST.

    3. At the Super Kmart store - 15200 E Colfax Avenue, Aurora, CO 80011, while supplies last.

    Students who come to school out of uniform will not be permitted to attend class. Parents will be called

    and asked to bring uniform.

    We do not check clothing labels. Uniform purchased from other stores that closely resembles French Toast will

    be acceptable as long as it falls within the following parameters. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
