When working for Breakthrough I always feel as though I am a part of a national body working toward

education equality. Recruiting great summer teachers is a crucial element to the functioning of the program

which made me feel connected to the national movement.”

I have never had a more fulfilling experience then my summer teaching at Breakthrough Collaborative. It

has influenced me to have a career in education. Breakthrough changes lives and it is the strong enthusiasm

and dedication of the college students who push this effort forward. We need to continue to recruit these

highly motivated students to our programs.”

How did Breakthrough create this list and why isn’t my wonderful campus on it? The Teacher Excellence Department weighed its limited financial and human resources against the need

to both maintain our current high level of applicants and boost our numbers in key areas. We created this

list based on the following criteria:

? Strong Breakthrough presence on campus that needs to be maintained

? A population that reflects Breakthrough’s mission and goals

? A commitment to service on campus, indicated by policies that support and encourage student

    involvement in programs like Breakthrough

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How did you choose the schools that will receive campus recruiters?

A: Based on our analysis of site hire numbers, our site locations, campus percentage and/or raw number of

students within our target populations (math and science, people of color, etc.), and resources on campus to

promote public service, we felt these schools were where our resources would be best spent for the 2009-2010

teacher recruitment season. We do recognize, however, that we receive excellent teachers from many more

campuses than appear on this list and therefore would be very happy to provide materials and other support

(though not stipends and intensive training) to interested teachers elsewhere. Given our limited resources right

now, we had to find a way to focus our efforts within reason.

Q: If my school isn’t on the list, can I still sign up? A: Absolutely! We still welcome your participation. Though we only provide on-going check-ins (focused on a

campus strategic plan) for the recruiters at these listed schools, we will still invite you to a phone training and

send you our training binder and recruitment materials so you can recruit at your school. Simply fill out and

return this application to make your case!

And, as always, our Teacher Network Specialist is available by phone or e-mail to answer any questions and

provide guidance. If you are able to open up a niche for Breakthrough at your school, it will improve the odds

that we will invest there in the future.

Q: Can I think about it and let you know later? A: Yes, but the deadline for final application is Monday, October, 26 2009 5:00pm PST (8:00pm EST).

Q: Am I going to be all alone on my campus? A: Not at all. We expect all of our alums to on your campus to advocate for the program and be available to

help. You’ll receive a roster of teachers on your campus to help you out. Additionally, we enlist the help of

directors and alumni in the area, as well as working with partner organizations like Teach For America to

    strengthen our campus recruitment nationwide.

Q: I recruited for Breakthrough last year. What do I do? A: If you are a returning recruiter, please fill out the returning recruiter application on the last page and send it to

Dave Bryson at dbryson@breakthrougcollaborative.org or fax it to (415) 442-0609.
