Cook it! Training 2009 - Accompanying notes

    Cook it! Tutor training is held twice each year and consists of a half day training in Food Hygiene and 2 days Tutor training.

Food hygiene training

    Cook it! Tutors are now required to have a Food Hygiene qualification (level 1 minimum) completed within the previous 5 years. Applicants who have already gained a Food Hygiene qualification must forward a photocopy of their

    certificate with their application.

    For those applicants who do not have a food hygiene qualification , Level 1 Award in Food Safety Awareness training is available (see dates on flyer). This training takes ? a day with an exam paper at the end of the session. It is held at the Strabane Campus of the North West Regional College and is delivered by an Environmental Health Officer.

    The cost of the Food Safety Awareness training is covered by the Community Food and Nutrition Team.

Cook it! Tutor training

    This lasts two full days and both days must be completed. There will be a maximum of 18 places allocated on each training programme.

Content

    Cook it! Tutor training is designed to be informal, interactive and practical and includes the following:

    Day one

    ; Basic principles of nutrition (The Eatwell Plate/Balance of Good Health)

    ; Using the Cook it! pack

    ; Running Cook it! groups a tutor’s account

    ; Experiencing Cook it! - sessions 1 and 6

Day two

    ; Group skills for Cook it! tutors

    ; Myths and realities nutrition recap

    ; Experiencing Cook it! sessions 2 and 3

    ; Resources for use with Cook it!

    ; Meeting the challenges practicalities of delivering Cook it!

    Training is delivered by the Cook it! team assisted by other Cook it! trainers and local tutors where appropriate.

Applying for training

    Each applicant must return the following to the Cook it! team:

    ; Cook it! Tutor Registration form completed by applicant wishing to

    undertake training

    ; Managers form completed by manager or chairperson of organisation

    nominating applicant for training

    ; Photocopy of Food Hygiene certificate (if appropriate)

    The Manager’s form is a declaration of support for delivering the Cook it! programme. This support includes:

    ; releasing the tutor for training

    ; releasing the tutor to deliver the programme,

    ; ensuring appropriate equipment is available and

    ; enabling tutor to attend additional training/updating/networking

    meeting at least once per year.

Allocation of training places

    A maximum number of 18 places will be allocated at each tutor training programme. Priority will be given to organisations who have identified funding for delivery of Cook it! and who fulfil the following criteria:

Projects which are already delivering Cook it! and

    o have lost a tutor(s) because of job change or ill health etc

    o are expanding their delivery to a wider group

    o are committed to supporting their tutor by eg releasing them to go to

    updates

Projects planning to commence Cook it! delivery and

    o have a group ready to participate

     are committed to supporting their tutor by eg releasing them to go to o

    updates

    o can commence Cook it! delivery within the next 3-6 months

Successful applicants will be sent a letter with a reply slip, offering them a place

    on training. The attached reply slip must be returned along with payment for the training.
