    The Working Group on Information Systems and Services (WGISS) is one of three subgroups thsupporting the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS). The 24 WGISS conference thth(WGISS-24) was held between Monday 15 October 2007 and Friday 19 October 2007 at

    DLR, the German Aerospace Centre at Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich in Germany. The meeting addressed progress reporting, showcasing and planning of forthcoming WGISS higher-level activities and was chaired by Ivan Petiteville of the European Space Agency (ESA).

    2.1 Overview of WGISS

    CEOS addresses the coordination of the satellite Earth Observation (EO) programs of the worlds government agencies along with agencies that receive and process data acquired remotely

    from space. WGISS acts in support of CEOS and promotes collaboration in the development of systems and services that manage and supply EO (Earth Observation) data to users worldwide. WGISS aims to stimulate, coordinate and monitor the development of systems and services which manage and supply the data and information from participating organisations missions. It addresses the needs of data providers by improving efficiency of operation and maximising the usefulness of the data they collect. WGISS also addresses the need of data and information for users, simplifying and widening access to the resources they require.

    There is an emphasis on the use of demonstration projects and to date WGISS has developed a number of tools, standards and services that are available on-line to assist in the access and use of Earth Observation resources. Most of the technical work is carried out under Subgroups and their associated Task Teams.

    Figure 1 shows how WGISS is currently organised. WGISS is overseen by a top level working group led by Ivan Petiteville of ESA and is supported by two subgroups. The Technology and Services Subgroup is led by Dingsheng Liu of the NRSCC and the Projects and Applications Subgroup is led by Pakorn Apaphant of GISTDA. Each subgroup is then divided into a number of Task Teams that focus on a specific aspect of the subgroup activities.
