Unit Introduction

Change control is the formal process of planning for and integrating the business function of

    changing/adding products and/or processes.

    Objectives

At the end of this unit you will be able to:

? Describe the Manufacturing Data ManagementEngineering Change master file setup.

    ? Complete an Engineering Change.

    Terminology

Process of managing changes in the manufacturing process or Change Control

    product.

Review group whose function is to quickly evaluate, gain Change Control Board

approval, and put into place manufacturing changes.

Individual responsible for reviewing, communicating, and Change Control

    implementing changes. Coordinator

Formal notification specifying an engineering change. Engineering Change Notice

     Change Control 12-1

Change Control

In a global, highly competitive business environment, a great product or a tried and true process

is not going to last over time. Business organizations are recognizing they must not only be open

to change, but they must encourage it, facilitate it, and organize themselves to accomplish

    change quickly and effectively.

    Change control includes:

? Developing and introducing new products

    ? Improving existing products

    ? Refining the manufacturing process

? Adopting new procedures and methods

Manufacturing Data ManagementEngineering Change is part of BPCS Manufacturing Data

Management. Its integration is covered in Unit 4 of this Student Guide.

Change Control Board

The change control board is a review group whose function is to quickly evaluate, gain approval, and put into place manufacturing changes. Change Control Board meetings are held as regularly scheduled monthly or weekly meetings or on an emergency basis.

    The Change Control Board:

? Acts as a clearing house for departmental communication ? Establishes goals, priorities, and scheduling for change ? Oversees, coordinates and facilitates the implementation of scheduled changes into the

    system

    Change Control Coordinator

Change control coordinators are individuals responsible for reviewing, communicating, and implementing changes. Their responsibilities include the following:

? Document and implement change procedures in an effective and timely manner ? Review all Change Orders and prepare them for review by the Change Control Board ? Develop departmental operating procedures for maintaining the data base ? Coordinate with operating departments any activity affected by the change such as procuring

    material, rework orders, etc.

? Maintain and audit foundation data to ensure accuracy ? Document all errors and process the required changes

Change Classification

Changes are classified as either a change in product form, fit, or function, or as a revision to an

    existing product.

One of the test criteria is satisfied; therefore, a new part number is required. Change

None of the test criteria has been satisfied; therefore, the request is marked as Revision

    a revision.

The following figure illustrates change classifications of revision and change.
