    1 INTRODUCTION TO THIS SURVEY 1.1 Context

    It is apparent that the current business model in the automotive industry, the mass-

    production of identical products, is flawed and becoming dysfunctional. The industry suffers

    from global over-capacity and rising stock levels and exhibits inherently low profitability. The

    automotive industry is a major contributor to prosperity, reinforcing the imperative for re-

    search and validation of an alternative and innovative approach, in order to secure its bene-

    fits for the next generation.

    The integrated European Research Project “ILIPT - Intelligent Logistics for Innovative

    Product Technologies" aims at the conceptual and practical aspects of the delivery to the customer of a customized car only 5 days after placing the order, the automotive industry's

    exciting and radical new business model.

    The project represents a radical leap for the automotive industry from the "stock push" and

    "mass production" thinking of the last century, to a stockless "build-to-order" (BTO) produc-

    tion strategy. This will require the re-invention of the complete automotive value stream from

    material producers to end consumers of cars, through a cost-optimised system delivering

    what the customer really wants without delay. Within the full framework of the "EU 5-Day Car

    Initiative", the ILIPT Project focuses on the following main topics (see Figure 1):

    ? product configuration for build-to-order supply chains addressing new product tech-

    nologies with the tools and management methods (Theme I),

    ? new concepts in delivering flexible production networks addressing collaboration

    across complete value streams and interoperability of these processes (Theme II),

    and

    ? novel methods and tools to assess and validate this radical business model for the

    European automotive industry (Theme III).

    Within the topic „Technical & Method Integrator‟ one objective of ILIPT is the development of

    a suitable methodological and enabling IT support to recognise, classify, evaluate and re-

    duce complexity. To accomplish this objective a “Study on complexity and variety manage-

    ment in the product development of the automotive industry” is planned.

    1.2 ILIPT study - Objectives

    Objective of this study is to provide insights in the ways companies currently reduce variety

    related complexity as well as optimise variety in product and process throughout the product

    development process (current state). Furthermore, the future trends with respect to this issue

    will be addressed in this survey.

    1.3 ILIPT Study - Proceeding

    As mentioned before, the two main objectives of the ILIPT study are to provide insights in the

    current state and determine/map out the future trends. To reach these main objectives the

    study is divided into two parts (Figure 2).

    1.4 ILIPT Study Expected Results

    With respect to the current state, the survey will provide answers to the following questions:

    ? How conscious is the automotive industry of the impacts of variety-related complexity

    on other organisational processes?

    ? To which extent are methods used/measures taken to avoid/reduce this complexity

    and/or optimise variety throughout product development?

    ? How do the used methods/measures function?

    ? What are the still existing problems?

    With respect to the future trends, the survey will provide answers to the following questions:

    ? How do you see the automotive development in 2015 (product and process)?

    ? What are the main future trends in the automotive development?

    ? What are the main trends for variety management in the automotive development?

    ? What are the main trends for complexity management in the automotive develop-

    ment?

    1.5 ILIPT Study Why you should participate As indicated, the results of this study will enable you to get to know the opinions of your col-

    leagues in the automotive development and to obtain a qualified overview about the state of

    the art today and especially about the possibilities of tomorrow.

    The survey is carried out anonymously which means you will be informed about the partici-

    pants of the study but individual answers will not be spread. In contrast to other instruments,

    this will enable a broadly validated independent opinion on critical issues and form the basis

    for further discussion and developments.

    The results of the study will be presented in Stuttgart at a “5-DayCar Symposium on Com-

    plexity Management”. All participating experts of the survey are invited to this symposium to discuss the outcomes and to present their approaches in more detail.

    For participation your are asked to take about 20 minutes of your time to fill out the question-

    naire in thinking about the state-of-the-art and future trends in complexity management and

    product development in the automotive industry. The structure and the way of filling out the

    form will be explained in detail in the following section.
