Head of Department: Professor AJ Day

    Research in the Department covers Polymer Engineering, Medical and Materials Engineering, Dynamics and Control, Fluid Dynamics, Automotive and Manufacturing. The Department’s

    research is interdisciplinary and has the common theme of Computer-Aided Engineering which has been strengthened by the new installation of state of the art hardware and software for CAD, CAM and CAE.

    Professor Phil Coates FREng led a 3-University group which obtained a ?2m collaborative EPSRC research grant for Enhanced Polymer Processing. Other research grants awarded included an extension of the DTI in-process measurement programme. The polymer engineering laboratories received a new servo-electric injection moulding facility from Mitsui-Fanuc. Professor Coates and Dr Zhongmin Jin obtained an HEFCE Research Capital grant of ?270k for a combined biological and polymer engineering programme which includes a new Computer Modelling, a joint simulator and micromoulding / atomic force microscopy equipment. Professor Coates was elected to the Council of the Institute of Materials, and gave plenary lectures at international conferences in Singapore, the USA, Canada and China on aspects of in-process measurements and rheo-optics in polymer processing. He also co-edited a new book on Solid Phase Processing of Polymers. Dr John Sweeney gave an invited lecture at the Eighth International Symposium on Plasticity held in Whistler, Canada and became a member of the EPSRC College.

    Dr Zhongmin Jin was awarded an EPSRC grant to investigate the lubrication mechanisms in artificial hip joint replacements. Another EPSRC grant was awarded to support international research collaboration on the Tribology of Natural Synovial Joints and Joint Replacements, involving the Universities of Bradford and Leeds, Waterloo (Canada) and Kyushu (Japan). Professor Dowson (FRS, CBE, Emeritus Professor at Leeds University) and Mr. D Shaw (Orthopaedic Surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary) continue their appointments as Honorary Visiting Professor and Honorary Visiting Lecturer in Medical Engineering respectively. Mr T Branfoot (Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar at St James Hospital, Leeds), has successfully completed his MSc project in the Department, and continues research collaboration as Honorary Research Fellow in Medical Engineering.

    Dr Peter Twigg, Dr David Elliot in the Department of Optometry and Dr James Selfe in the Division of Physiotherapy commissioned a state-of-the-art 3D Biomechanics HEFCE funded laboratory. The laboratory is already being used to analyse pathological gait patterns, and has also formed the focus for collaborative research proposals with local clinicians.

    Dr Alastair Wood joined the Editorial Advisory Board for "Computer Abstracts". Together with Dr Kambis Ebrahimi, he started a Teaching Company Scheme, concerned with the development and strategic incorporation of multi-axial CAE and dynamic analysis methods used in the design-to-production process of crankshaft vibration dampers, with Simpson International Ltd. of Halifax. Good progress has been made on the research project into Leakage Detection Monitoring and Failure Prediction funded by Yorkshire Water and the EPSRC. Novel, low cost sensors have been designed and tested, and the associated Neural Network analysis system has yielded promising results.

    Dr Steve Wright and Dr Felician Campean, with Professor Andrew Day, were awarded an EPSRC collaborative research grant with Jaguar Cars for Customer Correlated Life Prediction Models for

    Improved Design Verification of Automotive Components. This grant strengthened the Department’s research into Automotive Quality and Reliability under the Engineering Quality Improvement programme. Professor Day completed a programme of research into vehicle steering drift during braking, and presented a paper at the international Brakes 2000 conference held in Leeds. Dr Homer Rahnejat chaired the Multibody Dynamics Systems and Technologies conference at the University in March, which attracted speakers and delegates from all over the world.

    Professor Martin Thew’s research has demonstrated the efficiency of the Bradford design of hydrocyclone separator, and generated a patent application in feed supply. Collaborative research with a Norwegian company has shown that oil droplets can exist within water droplets contained within oil, thereby explaining poor separation performance and suggesting a route to improvement. A unique new research facility, comprising a stainless steel pressure vessel operating at 35 atmospheres pressure, is enabling the rate at which gas comes out of solution after a sudden drop in pressure to be investigated for the first time.

    Dr Mohamed Khan gained ERDF funding for an SME Manufacturing Technology Support Network for Bradford. At the invitation of the Government of Pakistan, he was seconded as a United Nations funded TOKTEN scholar based at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) of Engineering Sciences and Technology as Visiting Professor of Manufacturing in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He also worked at the Science and Engineering Services Directorate, SESD, Islamabad and Taxila. During the secondment he delivered research seminars on the subjects of Design, Manufacturing and Quality. He presented a paper and was session Chairman at the IMCC 2000 conference in Hong Kong.
