Tofte Lake Center’s Emerging Artists Program – 2010
Made possible by the Jerome Foundation
INFORMATION SHEET
ABOUT TOFTE LAKE:
Tofte Lake Center is an educational enterprise for artists wishing to expand and deepen their creative potential through collaboration with creators and thinkers in other fields in a natural setting and within a supportive community that offers interaction, stimulation, and reflection.
The programs provided at Tofte Lake Center balance group activity, personal work time, facilitated conversations, the exchange of work, and performance. All activities stem from the inherent belief that individual creativity is the essential tool in our evolution as a culture.
Norm’s Fish Camp provides Tofte Lake Center with facilities that feature both individual and community
work spaces which enhance opportunities for group gatherings and collaborative work, as well as meeting areas for meals and conversation. Boats, hiking trails, bicycles, and 12 acres of forest and lakeshore are available as well, to encourage both individual and group physical activity as stimulants for mental and emotional relaxation and revelation.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
TLC is launching its emerging artists program, which enables both individual creative artists and a collaborative team of artists to take time and attention to focus on their current work. This program subsidizes 2 week-long residencies for 7 emerging artists each week from the Minnesota and New York areas, and 1 week-long residency for a performing arts project that would have exclusive use of the facilities.
The residencies at TLC are intentionally interdisciplinary in nature. Artists from several disciplines can
apply: playwriting, poetry, prose writing, painting, music composition, and dance. We would be happy to accept applicants who sculpt, produce films, are photographers, work with crafts; we are, however, more limited in terms of the materials we can provide. The underlying philosophy is to provide space and means of support for individual artists wishing to further their creative endeavors in the visual, literary or performing arts. The dramaturgical assistance of TLC director Liz Engelman is available if desired.
EACH ARTIST WILL RECEIVE:
Each artist will receive a meal stipend of $200 for the week, as well as a $250 honorarium.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
There are 7 sleeping areas in four cabins. 2 cabins are solo cabins, the other five sleeping areas are either bedrooms or lofts in shared cabins. Each artist will have his/her own room/loft.
EMERGING ARTISTS:
We define “emerging artists” as those who have not attained name recognition in their profession/field by having a body of critically recognized work (at least 3 major productions, showings, exhibits, books) at major and well-known institutions/publishers.

Describe the project you plan to work on at TLC:
Where are you in your process at this time?
What are your goals and desired outcomes for your weeklong residency?
This residency is geared specifically for emerging artists. What is your definition of the term and how do you feel it applies to you? In thinking about the statement "I will have emerged when…”, describe how the project you are working on at TLC will help you move closer to this goal.
Please let us know why you want to do this work in an artists’ community?
Relevant Experience: Please include a bio below or enclose a resume.
Materials Required. Please describe what resources you need. Are any of these ones which you cannot provide yourself?
(Artists, please note that at this time we do not have a piano, kiln, welding, or print and video making equipment.)
Work samples. Please attach a prior work sample and explain how it relates to the project you are submitting. This would help us get a sense of your style, aesthetic, voice, etc. Examples could be 10-15 pages of written work, art portfolio photos, and 10-15 minute performance excerpts. You could send as an attachment or send us the link online.
