POSITION TITLE: Assistant Controller General Accounting

REPORTS TO: Controller

Provide senior level accounting expertise to assure that Mile High United Way’s finance functions operate in

    accordance with applicable federal and state laws, generally accepted accounting principles and internal

    policies and procedures.


    ? Oversight of general accounting and grants management finance functions, including processing of

    grant billings, payroll, accounts payable and bank deposits.

    ? Manage month end accounting close process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting

    supported by account reconciliations and financial review.

    ? Provide financial reports, account analysis and other relevant information for grant audits, annual

    financial audit, A-133 audit, IRS 990 filing and other financial reporting requirements.


    Fiscal Grant Management

    ? Monitor and account for grant awards to ensure proper tracking of funds in accordance with grant

    requirements and donor restrictions.

    ? Support program managers need in relation to grant budgeting, financial reporting and forecasting


    ? Oversee administration of DEZ tax credit service contract.


    ? Oversee receipts and disbursements process to ensure accuracy of transactions and adequate

    safeguarding of assets.

    ? Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations, including cash accounts, investments and

    liability accounts.

    ? Assure the integrity of the MHUW financial records.

    ? Actively recommend improvements to department processes, reporting and/or software to improve

    functionality, increase efficiencies and enhance customer service.

    Financial Reporting & Budgeting

    ? Monthly, distribute accurate and timely department actual vs budget reports after analytic review.

    ? Prepare monthly organization financial statements and analysis as needed.

    ? Work with IT department in relation to accounting software matters.

    ? Assist department heads with annual budget preparation and responding to information requests.


    Experience: Five years hands-on accounting and financial reporting experience. Non-profit experience

    desirable, including accounting for government grants and temporarily restricted funds. Two years of

    supervisory or management experience preferred.

    Education or Formal Training: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. CPA preferred.

     Special skills/knowledge:

    ? Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including supervision,

    delegation, interaction, training, hiring, and evaluation

    ? Knowledge and demonstrated application of generally accepted accounting principles

    ? Knowledge of internal controls environment

    ? Excellent comprehension, analytic and reconciliation skills

    ? Meticulous attention to detail

    ? Excellent organizational, troubleshooting and problem solving skills

    ? Commitment to outstanding customer service relationship management

    ? Must be comfortable with deadlines and managing multiple priorities

    ? Desire to give back to the community through commitment to MHUW’s mission

    ? Proven ability to adapt to changing business needs in a dynamic environment

    ? Committed to training and staff development as a part of organizational culture

    ? Ability to work independently within a team environment

     Computer skills:

    ? Strong Excel skills

    ? Payroll and Accounting software experience, Ceridian and Solomon preferred.

    ? Intermediate/Advance knowledge of Microsoft Office Products
