    The Project

Research best practice of Year 9 Programs with the aim to:

? Implement major change at the Year 9 level at Maffra Secondary College.

? Increase the attendance rate of our Year 9 students.

? Increase the learning outcomes of our Year 9 students, in particular, engagement.

? Offer a range of relevant, community-minded and personally challenging courses.

? Envisage our students engaged through working in project-based teams.

? Build a team of skilled teachers to implement this program

Our vision is to develop individuals as Our vision is to develop individuals as citizens of the College and the citizens of the College and the world. To world. To achieve this, a total achieve this, a total redevelopment of the redevelopment of the Year 9 Program from the traditional Year 9 Program from the traditional structure is our longer-term goal. structure is our longer-term goal.

The Need for Change Analysis of school data, including:

    ? Attendance and absentee figures

    ? Student achievement levels

    ? Retention rates

    ? Engagement figures

A comparison and analysis of this data confirmed that there was a

significant trend over the past 5 years, which indicated, reduced retention

rates and student engagement, high absentee rates and CSF Outcomes

lower than the state benchmark at the Year 9 level.

Our focus is to develop a program to address these concerns.

    6. What has been achieved?

We have a created an entirely new year nine program (see attachment for

our regional presentation). An active Year 9 PLT have worked together to

implement the program. The new program will be ready to implement in

2006. We are presently at the stage of writing up the new handbook. This

will be available early Term 4.

    7. What has been learnt?

From our school visits and our action research we have gathered invaluable

    information on:

? How to implement and manage the change process ? Best practise at the year nine level. ? how to include community links into a year nine program ? developing and building team management skills ? understanding and meeting the needs of the adolescent student at the

    year nine level

? developing and implementing new curriculum

    8. How this learning has been applied (or intended to apply) to practice?

? As already indicated, we have initiated a new Year 9 program and

brought staff on board through planning and program writing days. ? Staff outside the professional leave team, but within the PLT, have been

to visit other schools to see best practice first hand. ? Staff have also been sent to Thinking Curriculum, Habits of Mind,

Student Welfare, Using Interactive Whiteboards and other relevant

    Professional Learning Programs

? Staff have developed links with community agencies to become part of

    our new program

? Next year when the program is implemented staff will be available for

school visits so that others can learn from what we have achieved.

    9. How the application of the new knowledge/skills has impacted on student learning

    outcomes?

? The new program is intended to address the outcomes of student

engagement which will be measured by attendance and retention rates ? Improved student satisfaction in the areas of connectedness and self

esteem will be measured by student satisfaction surveys ? Improved literacy and numeracy will be measured by the new YEAR 9

    AIM testing

? Students will be required to keep reflective journals which will also be

used to assess the success of the program

    10. What you hope to achieve in the next six months, drawing on Teacher Professional

    Leave learning.

? We would like to see the school community embrace the new Year 9

program. Shortly we shall be holding information sessions for parents

and students to explain the details of the new program

? The program will then be implemented for the start of the 2006 school

    year with our present facilities

? We have used the year 9 program as the basis for our application for

    Leading Schools Fund.

? We shall involve the community in various projects related to the

    program.
