APL REEFER CONTAINER INSPECTION CRITERIA

SCOPE

    This guideline is applicable worldwide and described the inspection and repair criteria for the maintenance and repair of APL’s in-service reefer container.

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL

    ; These criteria are designed for use at all insulated reefer container inspections;

    ; Items not specifically detailed in the criteria are covered by this general introduction only if

    they require repair;

    ; The tolerances / permitted damages listed are selected to ensure the container is

    serviceable while minimising the need for repair and thereby preserving asset life; and

    ; The repair method selected should be the most economical and suit the particular repair

    location.

1.2 ACCEPTABLE DAMAGE

    This is defined as damage that is not to be repaired and includes:

    ; All flange damage except damage to weld connections;

    ; Deformation of structural members up to ISO +10mm on the side face and ISO +5mm on the

    end face; and

    ; Previous repairs should not be reworked unless the structural integrity of the container is

    compromised or it is unsuitable for cargo.

1.3 NON-ACCEPTABLE DAMAGE

    This is defined as damage that must be repaired because:

    ; The International Convention for Safe Containers, 1972, as amended (CSC) is violated and

    container safety is affected;

    ; The Customs Convention is violated;

    ; There is a reduction in the internal dimension by more than 25mm;

    ; The container is unsuitable for cargo;

    ; Cracks in welds are present unless otherwise stated; and

    ; Corrosion, which causes loss of structural integrity.

1.4 WEAR & TEAR

    This is defined as unavoidable change or deterioration of the condition of the container brought

    about by routine operational use and includes:

    ; General Foam deterioration such as poor insulation;

    ; Deterioration of door gaskets, fittings and hardwares;

    ; Deterioration of door fixings arising from deterioration of doors;

    ; Panels or linings delaminations resulting from routine container handling operations

    process;

    ; Deterioration of electrical, electronics components e.g. motors or PCB’s controllers

1.5 MANUFACTURING DEFECTS

    ; Manufacturing defects or suspected manufacturing defects are to be reported to APL

    Corporate M&R.

    ; Malfunction Components that are within the warranty period should to be reported to the

    respective APL office.

    2.2 POSTS

    5 GENERAL POINTS

    ; Container structure must conform to ISO dimension such as K-1 and K2 dimension.

    ; Dents on side and roof cannot be protruding more than 20mm outside the corner casting

    face, and underside must in line with the lower corner casting face. Forklift pocket straps

    must be ISO ? 10mm.

    ; Wear & Tear is unavoidable deterioration caused during normal operational use e.g. paint

    coating, delamination and corrosion. If any W&T items found on leased equipment, depot

    should advise the respective APL office for a possible swap program.

; Container must be water tightness and thermal tightness.

    ; Containers must conform to CSC (International Convention for Safe Containers) and TIR

    (Customs Convention).

    ; Whenever possible repairs should be done by minimum repair methods such as

    straightening, welding or riveting rather than inserting, patching, sectioning or renewing.

; Every repair must conform to the latest IICL repair criteria

    ; The minimum length of inserts or patches in any component is 150mm. There is no

    minimum distance from component ends to insert, except prime structure component must

    conform to latest IICL repair criteria.

    ; “Improper” repairs that are still structurally safe, serviceable, thermally sound and

    watertight must not be reworked. However, very obvious old and existing improper repair

    should be noted on the EIR or Repair Estimate at time of gate-in by depot.

    ; Any “Improper” repairs or “Temporary” repairs’ that are structurally unsafe, unserviceable,

    thermally unsound and not watertight must be examined and reworked to the more

    economical repair methods.

    ; Any repair not indicated by IICL or manufacturer guidelines must be referred to APL

    Regional/Corporate for further instruction.
