    As a competitor from Arizona, I would like to express my thanks to show management and all the volunteers who worked the show. You guys always make the show fun and enjoyable, even when the judge is a pill. I will be back next year for sure!!! Beth Glass

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Jennifer and Carol,

    My St. Georg team and I just wanted thank you both and all the great volunteers for another wonderful show. We enjoy very much coming every year and we’ll continue to do so in the future as long as we own horses and can afford to show. We feel very welcome and taken care off. We wished all shows would run so smoothly.

    Looks like we all got lucky avoiding the Rhino outbreak by just a few days. Here in Arizona all shows and horse events are shut down. Well, you guys must have a special connection above......

Thanks again and greetings from Sonoita, Scarlett, Guy and Kathy

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I just wanted to thank you for doing such a wonderful job. Everything ran sooo smoothly, everyone was so friendly and helpful and if I had a question at least 5 people were there to help. This truly was a fun show to be at!

    Once again, thank you and see you next year, Amy Glenn

    MAY 2011 REGION 5 MESSAGE

    I’ve started my season of show management and I’m now spending a couple of hours each day processing entries. I am very exited to see everyone at the shows and various educational events and I’m

    proud of the many successes our Region 5 folks have had and will have this coming year! My goal this year is to get my new baby horse out to some sport horse shows and teach her about the world outside the pasture. I hope you’re all working towards your goals for the year and may you be successful in meeting those goals.

    The USDF Executive Board Spring Meeting is next week and it will be a great experience learning even more about what goes into the management of this great organization. I’ve been reading my binder for the meeting and we have a lot of great topics up for discussion and decision. There will be a presentation on the National Championships, several upcoming USDF educational projects, approval of the 2012 Regional Championship sites, 2011 USDF Convention schedule discussions, and many other things covered. The June regional message will hopefully provide you with some great updates on many of these topics.

    Many new rule changes have gone into effect this year, including some as recently as March, so please be sure to read up on your USEF rulebook and be knowledgeable. The new helmet rule is a very important read. If you’re not showing, reading the rule book, especially the definitions of the gaits and

    movements, is a great educational tool. The definitions for the movements have changed this year also.

    We have 18 declared Junior/Young Riders for the 2011 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. If you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Kathleen Donnelly, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at kathleendonnelly20@hotmail.com or

    970-310-8729.

    I have not heard from anyone regarding nominations for our 2011 Region Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was started in 2009 by our then Regional Director Theresa Hunt and recognizes folks who have made significant contributions to dressage in our region. If you have someone you feel has made a contribution to our dressage community, please send me their name and a brief nomination letter. We will award one or more recipients this year and we would love input from folks throughout the region. Please email me nominations at slush@drgw.net. Our previous winners are Barbara Stine and Dr. Rudolf

    Vlatten. I would really love some help from our Region 5 members in determining who they feel is deserving.

Till next month!

     JUNE 2011 REGION 5 MESSAGE

    Wow! My first USDF Executive Board Spring Meeting was intense and a great learning experience! It was a great chance to meet my fellow board members face to face over meals and meetings and learn even more about dressage and the issues we face in the various parts of our extremely diverse country. A few things that I can share from the meeting include the following: We have a very positive financial outlook for the organization! The fiscal year that just was completed ended well. The Executive Board awarded the 2012 USDF/Great American Region 5 Championships to The Collectives, a great group of folks that run shows in Utah. The show will be held in Salt Lake City October 5-7, 2012. Nominations are open for the 3 new executive board positions, the new At Large Directors. These Directors will come from each of the 3 USDF Councils the Technical, the Administrative and the

    Activities councils.

    I’m also very happy to announce that Region 5 will host a Junior/Young Rider clinic again this

    October. We are excited to have George Williams return to Stellar Stables in Parker, Colorado October 22-23, 2011. Mark your calendars although only Juniors and Young Riders are allowed to ride, the

    clinic is open to auditors of all ages!

    The 2011 USDF Convention will be held November 30-December 2, 2011 in San Diego, California. Hotel rooms prices and convention registration prices will be the lowest they have been in years, so please consider joining us for the education programs and the governance of this great organization. The USDF Symposium will be December 3-4, 2011 also in San Diego and will feature our US National Coaches Anne Gribbons, Debbie McDonald, Jeremy Steinberg and Scott Hassler. You won’t want to miss this one – the young horse through the Grand Prix including the FEI Juniors and Young Riders.

Till next month!

    EQUINE HERPESVIRUS MYELOENCEPHALOPATHY

    Outbreak Update

    An outbreak of equine herpesvirus-1 apparently originated at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Western National Championships, held April 29 through May 8 in Odgen, Utah. According to a USDA situation report (PDF), as of May 19, a total of 997 horses were reportedly exposed to EHV-1 (either at the NCHA event or through contact with horses exposed at the event); 21 cases of EHV-1 infection and 12 cases of EHM have been confirmed; and 7 horses died or were euthanized.

    To limit the potential spread of EHV-1 and to alleviate horse owners' fears of exposure, a number of events in many states have been postponed or canceled and two veterinary teaching hospitals have closed to non-emergency equine and camelid cases.

    The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has developed resources about EHV-1, EHM and the current outbreak, including updates and a FAQ for veterinarians and FAQs and resources for horse owners.

     On May 19, the AAEP announced that it is working with the American Horse Council and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to collect data on affected horses and to coordinate communications about the outbreak.

    a.. Equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) is caused by equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The virus most commonly causes respiratory infection, and not all infected horses will develop EHM;

    b.. EHV-1 is a normally occurring virus found in the equine population; this outbreak is not being caused by a new virus or a new strain of a virus;

    c.. Signs of EHM in horses may include nasal discharge, incoordination, weakness of the rear limbs and hind end, lethargy, urine dribbling, and decreased tail tone;

    d.. Llamas and alpacas can also be infected with EHV-1 and may develop neurologic disease; e.. Currently, there is no equine vaccine that has a label claim for protection against EHM; f.. There is no specific treatment that has been proven effective for EHM;

    g.. If your horse has potentially been exposed to an infected horse (or through contact with people or equipment that have been in contact with an infected horse), or is showing signs that could indicate EHM, quarantine your horse and other potentially exposed horses and contact your veterinarian.

    The rhino vaccine actually does take care, very efficiently, of the other symptoms that this virus can cause, however, there's no information at this point that it confers really good immunity to prevent the

    neurological form.
