Survey Controller TSCe

Using a Symbol Hotshot barcode scanner with Survey Controller v10.0 on the TSCe

    Summary

The following information outlines how to connect a Symbol Hotshot (model: LS2104-I000)

barcode scanner to the TSCe for use with Survey Controller v10.0. At the moment, this is

unsupported functionality and this information is for Trimble Dealers only. I have outlined

the simple test I performed and some suggestions. This will provide you with the ability to

    test for other devices also.

    Description

The Windows CE platform Survey Controller v10.0 runs on provides a utility for reading in

an ASCII string into the currently active text field on the application operating in a TSCe (i.e.

you pull the trigger and it fills in the field). Current Ranger/TSCe firmware supports barcode

scanners with a serial (RS-232) interface and decoded output (most barcode scanners provide

decoded output). On the Ranger/TSCe, from the Windows desktop, choose Start> Programs>

Accessories> Keyboard Wedge to open the utility which supports barcode scanners.

(Although I have only used a barcode scanner there may be potential here to use any external Pdevice that provides an ASCII message at the press of a button from the sensor.)

    Power Supply

The Symbol Hotshot barcode scanner comes complete with it‟s own external power supply so there are no issues for supplying power to the scanner. Any scanner which does not have

this ability may cause difficulties. The Keyboard Wedge utility does allow for a 5V Power

out function, but this is limited. Power out is only supported on COM 2 (pin 20 of the

multiport). However, pin 20 is not passed through to any of the pins on the COM 2 adapter TechnicalTIfor the multiport (supplied with the TSCe), so it will be necessary to design your own

adapter/cable to connect direct to COM 2. Note that you must have a "B" board

Ranger/TSCe (serial number > 10000) in order to support "power out" on pin 20. You can

enable the power out by checking the checkbox in the serial keyboard wedge utility.

    Barcode information potential uses

There are three potential uses I see for scanning barcodes and their storage in the DC file. I

would suggest the most common will be as part of a text attribute, but you can also record

notes with a barcode scanner (and add a timestamp), or, fill in any field in the software which

would normally require keyboard entry. All involve making the field you wish to fill active in

Survey Controller, then pulling the trigger to read the barcode and fill the field in the current

screen on the TSCe. Please see the section “Field procedures‟ for more.

    Office Procedures

    Feature and Attribute Editor

Before using the barcode scanner in the field it will be necessary to define a suitable Feature

& Attribute Library and export it to the TSCe. You can only export a FCL file which is

associated with a project in TGO, so it will be necessary to create the project in TGO before

undertaking fieldwork. When creating the FCL, use text attributes to ensure the values from

the barcode scanner will be received. Ensure there is enough character spacing in the attribute

field to allow the entire contents of the barcode. Also ensure that when the FCL file is

exported, attributes are also sent. Please see the TGO documentation and Online Help for

more on creating a Feature & Attribute Library.

NOTE: When in the field, collecting an attribute involving a barcode, scanning the barcode

will fill the field and close the attributes window automatically. Please see „Field Procedures‟

for ways to work with this.

    Import/Export from TGO

TGO currently supports export to DXF with attributes but ESRI shapefile format does not

have the ability to include field observed attributes. However, you can set up a custom export

following the instructions in the TGO documentation and Online Help to create an ASCII

export as follows. This will allow you to create CSV files or TXT for import into other

applications for manipulation. You can also use “All Attributes” format for Export (under the

GIS tab of the Export window) to create a file as follows. This information corresponds to the

image shown at Figure 1 at the end of this document.

    Field Procedures

    1) Start Survey Controller, create the necessary job and start the survey as normal. Ensure

the barcode scanner has the necessary power & connections. Once you are ready to begin

    collecting points go to 2.

    2) Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Keyboard Wedge. (You may need to touch the lower

left hand corner of the TSCe screen to bring up the Windows Taskbar to do this.) Choose

"Options" to set the COM port, baud rate, etc as per the barcode scanner documentation.

You can also enable power out on pin 20 (as described in “Description‟ above) here if

required. Then choose "Start". This utility will read ASCII characters from the serial port

and inject them into the system as if they were a series of keyboard presses. Do not OK

or close the Keyboard Wedge Utility. Use Alt + Tab or touch the Survey Controller

screen in the background. You need to keep the utility open while using the scanner.

    3) In the field working with Survey Controller, wherever you come to a field requiring a

barcode select the field in the Survey Controller (i.e. touch it with the TSCe pen) and then

use the barcode to scan the field. There are a couple of tricks to be aware of:

    a. If you are collecting Notes and recording barcode information here, and you need

a Timestamp in the note, record the Timestamp first then scan the barcode.

Scanning the barcode will automatically close the Note then open then next Note

    record.

    b. If you are collecting on attribute for a point which has other attributes which do

not require barcodes, fill the others first. Again scanning the barcode will fill the

attribute field then close the attributes window.

    c. If you are collecting attributes and require only 1 barcode, Measure/Store the

point (which can be done before, after, or during editing the attribute) the open

the attributes window. Select the attribute field and scan the barcode. The

attribute window will store and close automatically.

    d. If you are collecting attributes and require more than 1 barcode attribute for a

particular point, it will be necessary to fill one field, then re-open the attribute

window and fill the next, and so on.
