Fourth National Workshop on Diabetic Foot Care, SGPGIMS, Lucknow

    December 05 06, 2009

    About the Workshop

In a diabetic patient, foot complications account for a variety of amputations in diabetic patients. The endeavor of all diabetic foot clinicians world over is to reduce this incidence. A functional foot is far superior to a costly prosthesis. The scientific advancements made by the medical science in the management of diabetic foot is noteworthy by all healthcare providers.

Keeping in view the mandate of the SGPGI, the department of Endocrine Surgery has initiated this yearly event of providing

the healthcare professionals with contemporary state of the art knowledge. It has been our endeavor to provide practical &

relevant knowledge backed by the scientific reasoning in a short time to the delegates. The target audience for this

workshop is the health care provider. It is of utmost importance for the patient to meet his doctor (the first contact) who is

well versed with the knowledge about what “to do” and what “Not to do” in a diabetic foot patient. A masterly approach of

referral at the right time to an appropriate centre can go a long way in minimizing the risk of amputation in these patients.

Unlike advanced countries, most of our medical institutions and hospitals continue to face the shortage of a qualified foot

care specialists (Podiatrists). As a result, diabetic foot care suffers resulting in the high incidence of foot morbidity which ultimately land the patient having amputations in our country. Awareness is the best remedy for providing better care. The

role of paramedical health care providers is equally important. Therefore this workshop encourages their participation. The

feedback and enthusiasm shown by our delegates in the last year‟s workshop and the course manual (prepared by us) has

encouraged us to expand this workshop from regional to national level.

An urgent need has been felt by doctors in the northern part of the country to have a refresher kind of condensed course on

the contemporary management strategies recommended for the diabetic foot patient. Advances made in the various aspects

of diabetic foot care easily qualify for a one and a half day event of this sort. The organizers wish to provide something for

everyone i.e. right from a dresser to a Professor. Issues in offloading the foot and customized footwear for the patient are

contentious issues which appear to be complicated to the common physician. Budding „medical entrepreneurs‟ willing to set

up a diabetic foot care centre in their cities would be particularly delighted. Didactic lectures will be limited while more time will be devoted to the discussion, practical „hands on‟ sessions, tips. On second day of the workshop delegates will be able

to share their experiences. This will be followed by panel discussion with the experts with active participation with patients, public and media. A brain storming session will discuss how to rehabilitate the foot once the treatment at hospital is over.
