    The fountain

The fountain is a very famous poem written by Sara Teasdale, who is an excellent American poet. The fountain, according to the dictionary, is a structure from which water is pumped up into the air, found as an ornament in parks and gardens/yards.Therefore,it is an object, not a person. However,in this poem, Sara Teasdale breaks the definition of the fountain, employs personification, and presents a fountain that is not only able to say, sing but also answer the authors questions.

Sara Teasdale comes up with two questions

    what do you say

    Singing at night alone?

But are you content as you seem to be

So near the freedom and rush of the sea?

By the fountains voice, the author highlights the theme of the

poem:nothing escapes, nothing is free. Using simple and plain

language, it allogorizes that there is no complete freedom. Death,torture,happiness,pain---they are part of life and no one could escape it.

Now,lets analyze the poem stanza by stanza.

Fountain, fountain, what do you say

    Singing at night alone?

It is enough to rise and fall

Here is my basin of stone.

There are many figures of speech in this atanza, such as alliteration, repetition as well as personification. Alliteration is the figure of speech that uses of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words that are close together, as in Fountain,

fountain. It is good for sound rhyme, musical effect and significant emphasis.fountain, fountainare also anaphora,a figure in rhetoric in

which the same word or words are repeated at the beginning of succeeding verse or clause.it is epistrophe too. The author repeats fountain twice to expressing her strong emotion towards the fountain and her eagerness to talk with it as well as attract the readers

attentions. In the beginning of the poem, the author wanders what the fountain said and sang at night alone. If we havent read the

following part,we may think that the author is saying to herself for the reason that the fountain could not speak in our common sense. However,as we move on,we are surprised to find that the fountain could speak! Personification is the most striking formal feature of the poem.It gives the fountain life and enable it to speak

so we readers could hear the fountains voice and guess its

feelings.rise and fallare active words.compared to negative

words,it means the fountain is satisfied with the condition. "rise and

fall"also makes us see the foutain's movement, Here is my basin of

stoneare anastrophe.the End-Weight Maxim states that the most important information should be placed at the end of the sentence.here the important information is my basin of stone.the

author emphasis the place where the fountain lies. Compared to sea and river,my basin of stoneis a very small place, but the

fountain said he is satisfied with it.the author felt very puzzled.so he asked:

But are you content as you seem to be

So near the freedom and rush of the sea?

"I have listened all night to its laboring sound,

     It heaves and sags, as the moon runs round;

Ocean and fountain, shadow and tree,

    Nothing escapes, nothing is free."

In this stanza, the author employed end rhymes. to achieve the beauty

in rhyme. be,sea, tree, freeall rhymed with/I:/ and

sound, roundrhymed with /au/.as we all know, the sea is

multitudinous and it stands for freedom .in our

mind, river ,leak, fountain are considered the children of the great

sea.they should pursue it ,miss it and long for it.the place where

the fountain lies---basin of stoneis such a small place .whats

worse,it could not obtain much freedom because it is controled by

its surroundings, such as the weather(maybe someday the water in

the fountain will dry out),the area of it (the water could not flow

into other place)and many other factors that restrict the fountains

freedom.howerer, the sea is free.that the fountain satisfied with its

condition and dont want to go to the sea puzzled the author very

much.how could you be content,so near the freedom and rush of

    the sea?

“Laboring, heaves and sag”are all negtive words,it shows the

speaks dislike towards the objection.in the fountains reply,we can

infer that the fountain did not envy the seas life,to the contrary,it

dislike its life style.why? Ocean and fountain, shadow and tree,

    Nothing escapes, nothing is free."

Parallel structure is choosed by the author.when I read it,I found the

rhyme here sounds very beautiful. Ocean and fountain, shadow

and tree,Nothing escapes, nothing is free.althouth the sea is

powerful and considered to be free,it is also under the control of

the moon.it moves as the moon runs around.nothing is free.there is

no definitely freedom in the world.so the fountain is content as it

is.there is no need to envy the life of the sea.the sea is not free as

it seem to be.we are no difference.

In conclusion ,the poet chooses plain words and employs alliteration, repetition, personification, anaphora , Parallel structure

and some other figures fo speech to express the main theme---

There's no definite freedom. The fountain is so well orgainized

and there is so wonder it enjoys great popularity all over the

    world.
