    The Polaris PDE system provides location-based services using traditional SS7 signaling. Polaris

    intends to build a Position Determination Entity (PDE) in a Location Network for retrieving updated

    location of a roaming subscriber. The Polaris PDE consists of two entities: the PCF and the Gateway.

    The PCF shall talk to the other network elements through a Gateway which will physically interface

    with the Mobile Switching Centers (E12 interface) and Mobile Positioning Center (E5 interface). The

    A-bis Control function (ACF) collects radio interface messages from A-bis probe unit and provides on

    demand Network Measurement Reports (NMR) to the Positioning Control Function (PCF).

    To determine the location of a mobile in a GSM network, PCF requires network measurement reports

    for the mobile on the radio channel. The network measurement and related information is carried

    within messages on GSM A-bis interface (BTS-BSC).

    A-bis Probe Unit acts as probe on the GSM A-bis interface and provides A-bis messaging information

    to APU clients over TCP/IP network. ACF acts as a client to an APU and receives messages

    exchanged over A-bis interface. Using the A-bis interface messages received, ACF collects network

    measurement information for the mobile. ACF acts as a server to PCF and provides network

    measurement information for a mobile over TCP/IP network.
