Introductory section

    INTRODUCTION

Competitive Manufacturing is an innovation achieving wide acceptance in industry both in Australia and internationally as a tool to drive transformational change in organisations. It is a systematic approach to continuous improvement which focuses on increasing customer value and improving customer and employee satisfaction, with clear benefits to the bottom line. It requires the engagement and commitment of staff at all levels of the organisation with senior management taking responsibility for driving the change process and leading by example with active and visible participation and commitment of resources. Competitive manufacturing philosophy empowers teams to identify and implement improvements in their work areas and is designed to deliver sustainable culture change.

The Global Competitive Enterprise Toolbox is a flexible and accessible learning resource to support teachers delivering the Certificate IV in Competitive Manufacturing. It is designed to supplement face-to-face, teacher-directed delivery, although it can be used as a stand-alone resource for individuals and enterprises adopting competitive manufacturing practices. As the teacher/trainer/facilitator, we recommend that you encourage learners to engage with their managers early in the learning process to ensure they have the support they need to successfully implement competitive manufacturing processes in their work environment. INTRODUCING THE TEACHER GUIDE

The Teacher guide has been developed to help you get the most from the Toolbox. It explains the learning methodology underpinning the development of the resources and activities and provides guidance in their use. It identifies which units of the Certificate IV in Competitive Manufacturing are addressed by the Toolbox and provides suggestions for assessment. It provides advice for online delivery to enable you to maximise the learning experience for your learner group. It also explains computer hardware and software required for use of the Toolbox. GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE PRODUCT

The Toolbox is set in the context of a virtual manufacturing company called Global Enterprises. The CEO of Global Enterprises sets the context for the Toolbox by explaining that the business is experiencing a significant downturn in sales and profitability. He goes on to explain that everyone at Global needs to review and improve the way they operate.

In this context the learner is a member of the change management team at Global Enterprises. The learner will have some responsibility as a leader and will be working with and providing advice to other team members.

Information will be given and specific tasks presented to help improve Global Enterprise's performance.

It is essential that the learner starts the Toolbox by listening to the CEO‟s speech in the

    Introduction on the home page.

The learner is supported throughout the Toolbox by Jo and Sebastian who are experienced staff from Global Enterprises.

The Toolbox is divided into an introduction and four sections:

    ? Team management

    ? Cost

    ? Implement 5S

    ? Lead & sustain change.

Each section is based on unit/s of competence from the Certificate IV in Competitive Manufacturing MCM40104 and has the following features.

    Scenarios

The scenarios provide a context within Global Enterprises for the learner to undertake specific learning activities.

    Related resources

These are resources to help the learner with the scenario based activities and to further expand the knowledge and skills required to understand the topic.

The related resources contain the underpinning knowledge for the five competencies and are accessed from the left-hand navigation bar.
